Window of Opportunity
One of the major flaws of the WHI was that the majority of participants were post-menopause, age 60+ (many with existing co-morbidities like diabetes and excess weight). What we now know is that starting estrogen at that stage is potentially problematic. Current guidelines state that you have a ten-year window to start HRT from the start of menopause. So if your last period happened when you were 49, you’ve got until the age of 59 to safely start that regimen. Post ten years isn’t completely off-limits, but the pros and cons should be discussed with your doctor. This podcast episode with Dr. Lauren Streicher and Dr. James Simon offers a great overview.
